You could use the "default" target of your root build file as a type of
'usage' target, detailing all possible targets in the currect build file and
their effects.  Thus forcing the user to understand and choose a target.

common, yes - simple, no.

The reason is that Ant doesn't know what it would do without actually
doing it.  <jar> can't tell you which files it would add to a jar
without javing <javac> compile them first and so on ...
