This appears to be a compiler quirk, or an odd choice of compile flags.
Since this is a deprecated API, I don't see much point in touching/"improving"
the old stub if it's a byproduct of a compiler quirk/bug?

Can you be a little more detailed with the warning results you see (what you
were compiling, what the compile line was, etc?)  Is this mixed model large
data/short code pointers?

None the less NULL is always a valid pointer value.
