In the end I remembered that I had a similar problem before and that it was
caused by the component selecting a maven release plugin that was too old
for Nexus to accept.

I was able to get around this by explicitly selecting the latest version of
the release plugin:

mvn org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-release-plugin:2.5.3:prepare
mvn org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-release-plugin:2.5.3:perform
