The attached patch (v1-0001-CASSANDRA-409-update-string-property.txt) is probably Good Enough
for the newly minted 0.4 branch, but a more robust solution is needed so that this isn't forgotten
down the  road.

The version string itself should probably be placed some place more appropriate/obvious/prominent,
in case it is ever needed elsewhere (DatabaseDescriptor maybe?)

It would also be nice if this could be automatically synced with the version string in build.xml
(perhaps using ants replace task? see
