Subject Re: password policy for new VMs
Date Thu, 03 Sep 2015 10:22:35 GMT

Currently, you can only change the length of the generated password for VMs by setting the
global setting ‘vm.password.length’.

The current password generation algorithm does consider using alpha-numeric characters but
no special characters, here it the password generator utility used which can be easily replaced
or improved:

For the default length=6, the password would satisfy the regex - [a-z][A-Z][0-9][a-z]*

Prior to 4.5, the password server was a socat+bash based program which would save the VM password
in /var/cache/cloud/passwords file and I think introducing special characters such as $, %,
# etc could have caused some password serving and setup issue. Starting 4.5.1+, the new Python
based password server can definitely handle special characters, though we would need to verify
is the old reset password scripts would work with password strings with special characters.

If you think we should consider improving the generator logic to include special characters
etc, you can open a ticket on ACS JIRA.

Is there any way to change the policy for the passwords generated for new VMs? For instance,
increasing the length, defining a mix of special and alphanumeric characters etc.
