The text containing the <a href=".."></a> is read from the database with
xsp. This data is then put through a xsl-template, but when it gets there,
just after xsp, all <,> and & tokens are encoded as &lt;,&gt; and &amp;.

 
This should not happen for the parts from the database. Can i stop this from
happening?

Could you give us some more information how did this happen?
To output <a href...> simply write it somewhere in your formatting XSL
template:
 
<xsl:template match="link">
    <a href= {@href} <mailto:{@href}>  .../>
</xsl:template>

How can i stop cocoon from encoding the markup: 

        i want to output: <a href=".."></a> 
        
cocoon makes of this: 

        &lt;a href=".."&gt;&lt;/a&gt; 

how can i stop cocoon encoding the markup?
