Subject [jira] [Commented] (FLINK-4315) Remove Hadoop Dependency from flink-java
Date Fri, 14 Oct 2016 12:28:20 GMT

Fabian Hueske commented on FLINK-4315:

Hi [~kenmy],

while discussing to drop Hadoop1 support, the topic of removing the Hadoop dependency from
flink-java came up again.
I started a [discussion thread on the dev mailing list|http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/flink-dev/201610.mbox/%3CCAAdrtT0RidTX350KHKrFDFos798phsvRdqsnvsweFcx%3D9YxgyQ%40mail.gmail.com%3E]
and proposed to clean up the dependencies but not remove but deprecate methods that refer
to the Hadoop dependency.
That way, users are aware that these methods will be removed in a future version.

Would you like to reopen your PR and adapt it such that methods are annotated with {{@deprecated}}
instead of being removed?

Thanks, Fabian

> Project: Flink
> Issue Type: Sub-task
> Components: Java API

> The API projects should be independent of Hadoop, because Hadoop is not an integral part
of the Flink stack, and we should have the option to offer Flink without Hadoop dependencies.
> The current batch APIs have a hard dependency on Hadoop, mainly because the API has utility
methods like `readHadoopFile(...)`.
> I suggest to remove those methods and instead add helpers in the `flink-hadoop-compatibility`
