Subject [users@httpd] how do downloads happen

Hi,

I hope this is the right forum for this kind of question. 

I'm trying to ensure on the fly that a download of a large file has
happened successfully I'm thinking of catching a 206 return code and
checking the file size, via php or some scripting language. But I wonder
if there is an easier way of telling, or some standard method that
people would use? 

I was also trying with process control, by checking for a SIGPIPE, but
this could be a very wrong approach...
