Thanks.  Seems like it should work, but maybe I'm not doing it right.  When 
I turn it on, all requests yield "Internal Server Error."  Should this be 
preceded by a RewriteCond statement?  This is what I have now:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(.*)\\(.*)$ $1/$2 [R]
RewriteEngine Off
