I tried that.  I'm including the actual config file in sites-available 
if it helps.

<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost
ServerName <>
         ServerAlias <>

DocumentRoot /var/www/ 
<Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
<Directory /var/www/>
Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
allow from all

I'm new to apache but I always specify the directory in the block. Yours 
points to the default /var/www/ which would show the default apache 'it 
works' page. Try
/var/www/ <>/ or in your case

<Directory /var/www/>

Then again maybe this has nothing to do with it . . .
