What specific operations would such a cache help optimize? Is there no other way to speed
them up, or avoid entirely?

Note that with all caches come with the extra overhead and complexity of maintaining them,
so Ideally we'd have as few caches as possible. And the caches that we do have should be clearly
justified.

In most cases where caches have been suggested so far we've been able to achieve significant
order-of-magnitude performance improvements just by refactoring code to avoid unnecessary
content lookups. Would something like that be possible here as well?
