Because James was written before DataInputStream.readLine wasn't
deprecated (?).

BTW, to have the same effect, you can use LineNumberReader;
LineNumberReader reader = new LineNumberReader(new InputStreamReader(
  new BufferedInputStream(istream)));
String line = reader.readLine();
