Given...
<!ENTITY parm1 "red">
<!ENTITY parm2 "blue">
...you can use &parm1; anywhere you would have coded "red" and &parm2;
anywhere you would have coded "blue".

In fact, can do anything that XML allows! See
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml#sec-entity-decl and
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml#NT-EntityRef for more.
