I also agree. One reason code, including James' doesn't get instrumented
enough is that its a time consuming activity, especially when retrofitting
it.

The approach taken with one major, and I mean major, commercial product is
to accept that programmers can't be relied upon to follow whatever the
current instrumentation strategy is and that the strategy evolves requiring
costly rework. Their solution is to use AspectJ to add instrumentation
during the build process.
