I think that the cause is always the 8bitmime support in Javamail that 
is buggy. I enabled it in James 2.3.0 so James 2.2.0 is safe: I will 
disable it for the next release (2.3.0a2) until we find out what the 
problem is.

With James 2.2.0 and AddFooter you should not get broken encodings: can 
you investigate deeper on this?
