For using read/unread and sent-item supported by server with a central
storage you need an imap server. Although there is something on the way,
stable IMAP support in James will take its time.

If you want to use pop3 you have to store fetched messages on the users
harddisk. This is possible by javamail, too by using a Store
implementation. You could try http://javamaildir.sourceforge.net/ or
http://mstor.sourceforge.net/. But note: they are no James projects and
not supported here.
