It's a pity that the strategy has such a big impact on performance.

As it is I would prefer a hard-coded solution where CRLF and LF are considered to be line
breaks whereas sole CRs are simply ignored.

I think if someone really needs a different strategy it is always possible to write a filter
input stream that throws an exception if it encounters a single CR, for example.
