(hopefully those who know a little bit more about it will jump in)

a good place to start is by checking out trunk and then running the
smoke tests ("ant clean dist smoke"). these are a test of integration
test which run against the distribution packages. if the smoke tests
pass for both deployment types then the limited spring deployment we
have will be working ok.

AIUI the next stage would be to try to get the spring war running .
this means switching from the hybrid approach taken at the moment to a
pure spring one which is not dependent on phoenix (hopefully bernd
will jump in and correct any misunderstandings). this is being tracked
in https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JAMES-834.
