Looks like the .checkpoint file was generated from this code in
ProcessorStateManager
:

        // write the checkpoint file before closing, to indicate clean
shutdown

        try {

            if (checkpoint == null) {

                checkpoint = new OffsetCheckpoint(new File(baseDir,
CHECKPOINT_FILE_NAME));
