I don't like the particular patch.  What I would do is to create two 
implementations of OutputStream one that redirects to the current value 
of System.out and one that redirects to the current value of 
System.err.  On activateOptions(), a OutputStreamWriter would be 
created on one of the delegating OutputStreams and given to the base 
class, WriterAppender.  I'll take a shot tomorrow.
