           Summary: o.a.l.RollingFileAppender, DailyRollingFileAppender and
                    ExternallyRFA not compatible
           Product: Log4j
           Version: 1.3alpha
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: other
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: Appender
        AssignedTo: log4j-dev@logging.apache.org
        ReportedBy: carnold@apache.org

The SVN HEAD currently contains facades that mimic the configuration behavior of
the log4j 1.2 RollingFileAppenders but delegate to o.a.l.rolling.RFA for
implementation. These, while better than nothing, are not compatible with
existing RFA extensions and there is likely no way to remain compatible without
migrating the log4j 1.2 implementations forward.

Based on the volume of traffic on RFA's on the mailing list, extending the RFA's
appear to be a common practice. Not supporting existing extensions in a 1.3
release is unacceptible in my opinion. However, the ported RFA's should be
marked as deprecated. The ported RFA's could also be isolated in a
log4j-obsolete.jar with other files that have been superceded and should not be
used in new code.
