You seem to be missing a starting < before appender, so it is  
interpreted as a text, not an appender element.

No log4j.dtd, either from the log4j 1.2 branch or log4j 1.3 branch,  
has declared the class attribute for the logger element, but it was  
declared for the deprecated category element.  Will file that as a  
bug for future releases, if you want to avoid the "Attribute class  
must be declared" warning, use category as the element name, not logger.
