There is definietely a bug in the VM lurking somewhere. I've traced the problematic loop and
it's a mess -- readVInt gets inlined twice and updates to upto don't propagate, resulting
in general havoc later on and an assertion. More details here.

I don't know of any sensible workaround other than -XX:-DoEscapeAnalysis (which helps but
slows things down considerably). And I don't see the link to G1GC but I have very little idea
of internal C2/opto workings in hotspot -- fingers crossed for the hotspot folks to find out
where the core of the problem is.
