see my other message.  You cannot create a (sub)query with only  
prohibited clauses.  The second query asks:

Q = find docs containing 'text' or matching X;
X = find docs that don't match 'collection:pile1' # invalid query

note that if "-collection:pile1" is the main query, Solr detects this  
case and handles it.
