Yes, this was the issue.

I downloaded the .tar.gz, extracted the contents, put the jar file in /usr/tomcat6.0.20/solr/lib,
and the dataimport page is now not showing any errors, nor is there any error shown in the
logs.

You have not put the JDBC driver in your class path. If you are using mysql,
download the mysql jdbc driver and add it to the 'lib' directory inside your
solr home directory.
