Agreed.  I think that all we need is something like

public interface IoFuture<V> extends Future<V>
{
     public IoFuture <V> register(IoFutureListener<V> listener);
}

public interface FutureListener<V>
{
     void exception(Throwable t);

     void completed(V result);
}
