add a shutdown hook to your application to make sure the client terminates the connection
properly.
call code like this before or right after you established a connection:

    protected void addShutdownHook_GracefulXMPPTermination() {
        Runtime.getRuntime().addShutdownHook(new Thread(new Runnable() {
            @Override
            public void run() {
                LOGGER.info("executing shutdown hook.");
                XMPPConnection locXmppConnection = xmppConnection;
                if (locXmppConnection != null) {
                    locXmppConnection.disconnect();
                }
            }
        }));
    }
