The patched version is indeed better IMHO. I've always wondered about this white shading.
It may also lessen the troubles with themes in case they can have an impact.

Here is the topic, I've embedded the screenshot for an easier comparison:

  Thanks for the comparison presentation.
  Although the "flat" icons do not make it clear what the extent
  of the button is, mouse-over makes it very clear, as do the
  resultant tool tips.
  So long as there is no difficulty with regard to accessibility,
  the icons with full transparency to the background do seem to
  provide a cleaner and simpler presentation.
