Using application headers in messages causes a very large slowdown

                 Key: QPID-3883
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/QPID-3883
             Project: Qpid
          Issue Type: Improvement
          Components: C++ Broker, C++ Client
    Affects Versions: 0.14
            Reporter: Andrew Stitcher

Messages that have application headers have a very high overhead compared to messages that
don't have application headers.

There are multiple causes of this problem:

* Messages are copied unnecessarily in the client code
* Encoding/decoding FieldTables is inefficient
* Encoding/decoding FieldTables is done unnecessarily
* Copying FieldTables is inefficient
* The mapping of Variants to the current underlying FieldTable implementation may be inefficient
