Its OK... its fixed thanks.

I my stupidity (coupled with not having done any XML parsing 
before), I had added XML parser JARs to my WEB-INF/lib directory. 
This was screwing up the internal parser.

Begs the question, what happens if you don't want to use the built in 
parser? But that's probably one for another day!!!
