The number of users correlates highly with its maturity,  its
available community support, its lack of killer bugs, its
cross-platform stability, and its ease of deployment. This is why
Subversion's evolution as "CVS done right" was so effective: CVS was
very popular among many shops, and it leveraged the popularity of CVS,
even though CVS had many flaws (which Subversion attempted to
address).
