So that'll be why ffmpeg and friends can't play it. However, coder supports the -mime option,
which does seem to produce files mplayer likes

I also did find this snippet, which looks promising:

Any chance you could find a WB+ file so we can see if that begins #!AMR-WB+\n or similar?
