Subject RE: Trafodion 2.0 & Java
Date Sat, 02 Apr 2016 17:31:33 GMT
JVM guarantees backward compatibility - Any application compiled with JDK
1.7 will work with JDK 1.8. So, it should be ok to take Trafodion compiled
with 1.7 version and install it with 1.8. But, if Trafodion is compiled with
1.8, we would require 1.8 version to be installed on the customer
installation. So, I would think Trafodion should plan to move to 1.8 only
when the dependent products are compiled with 1.8. This would help
contributors to maintain one set of JDK installation to build Trafodion.

For now, we can relax Trafodion installer to allow JDK 1.8 version too
because of the backward compatibility provided by JVM. As a contributor, I
have already done some limited testing with building and testing Trafodion
with JDK 1.8 and found to be working.

Let us also have it in JIRA that particular version are designated
(recommended?) with respect to a Java version. That way we can create better
(more insightful) release notes.
