Interesting...

I first reproduced it by doing a new extract of trunk/uimaj and trying
to build, after blowing away my local maven repo (but just for
org/apache/uima).

The JVM used was: Sun 1.6.0_11-b03 on my Windows XP machine.  Version
reports:

D:\r2.3\trunk\uimaj>java -version
java version "1.6.0_11"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_11-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b16, mixed mode, sharing)
