Subject [jira] [Commented] (UIMA-3374) A new mode for annotation viewer based on feature values
Date Fri, 22 May 2015 21:54:17 GMT

Marshall Schor commented on UIMA-3374:

Some more observations: The idea behind the entities view is that the user would include
their own Java class that implemented the Entity classifier, etc. I think this might be missing
from the documentation. If the user selects the entities mode, and doesn't supply a classifier,
then a "default" one is used; that default's behavior isn't described. Also not described
is how to set the entity resolver.

In the Features view, this view appears to implement a "workflow": When first selected, it
forces the "Annotation Types" view. If the user picks a particular Annotation type, it then
forces a switch to the Features view. Likewise, when a feature is picked, it forces a switch
to the Feature Values view. This behavior was initially confusing to me - I had the expectation
that, upon picking an Annotation type, I would see the radio button for that change to the
"selected" appearance. I thought this UI would switch to the Features mode only when I clicked
the "Features" tab. My expectations are, I think, what typical users would expect as to how
this UI would work. If you want the automatic workflow style, it would be good if the UI could
imply that mode of operation to naive users, so they would expect that.

> I'd like to propose adding a new "view mode" in the UIMA Annotation Viewer so that user
can pick a specific type of annotations, and then pick a specific feature, and pick specific
feature values available so user can see a subset of those annotation objects that have the
specific feature values.
