Subject Parser problem

I tried to put an #if statement on two lines as such:
#if ($params != "paramList" && $params != "req" && $params != "res" &&
      $params != "c")

and got the following error:

SEVERE: parse error for template
org.apache.velocity.exception.ParseErrorException: Encountered "\n" at line
82, column 76.
Was expecting one of:
    "[" ...
    "(" ...
    <STRING_LITERAL> ...
    "true" ...
    "false" ...
    <NUMBER_LITERAL> ...
    <IDENTIFIER> ...
    "{" ...
    "!" ...

Is this a bug or a feature?
