DOH! I looked at my code (always a brilliant idea) and I had:

res.setContentType("text/plain");

the Content-Type appears to be set as "text/plain"

i opened it with both Mozilla and IE and they agree on that much.  IE
just
tries to be super-sneaky-smart and disobediently renders it as html.
insolent M$ software!

anyway, you need to be sure the Content-Type header gets set to
"text/html"
