On the openjdk thing - I just don't get why openjdk-6-jdk isn't going to install its dependencies.
That's normal apt-get behavior.

isn't actually there. I don't know if they actually have a consistent link to get the JDK7
tarball regardless of version. I'd just use OpenJDK for now, if you can.
