Subject [jira] [Commented] (CASSANDRA-6529) sstableloader shows no progress or errors when pointed at a bad directory
Date Thu, 02 Jan 2014 17:05:52 GMT

Tyler Hobbs commented on CASSANDRA-6529:

It would be nice to have an error message instead of a stack trace:

~/cassandra $ bin/sstableloader /foo/bar -d
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: Could not retrieve endpoint ranges:

Caused by: InvalidRequestException(why:No such keyspace: foo)
	at org.apache.cassandra.thrift.Cassandra$describe_ring_result$
	at org.apache.cassandra.thrift.Cassandra$describe_ring_result$
	at org.apache.cassandra.thrift.Cassandra$
	at org.apache.thrift.TServiceClient.receiveBase(
	at org.apache.cassandra.thrift.Cassandra$Client.recv_describe_ring(
	at org.apache.cassandra.thrift.Cassandra$Client.describe_ring(

Can we wrap the describe_ring() call in a try/catch for InvalidRequestException and just print
the "why" attribute and a brief message that suggests checking the usage?

If you incorrectly just put the sstables in a {{<keyspace_name>/}} directory, the sstableloader
process will not show any progress, errors, or other output, it will simply hang.
