huh. As far as i can tell, every call to next() in PythonStreamer and underlying classes is
always preceded by a call to hasNext().

With the now working debug statements, do we not even execute the first iteration?

It _could_ be that the iteration is actually not formed correctly. So maybe there is no input
for our function since the iteration is broken.
