mostly replying to my own comment here. I benched this approach a bit and it turned out to
not be as good as I initially thought. I'm now back into looking for a way to revive the old
way of running compaction: basically in the case of offline put a lot less info in the maps,
which will in turn reduce the pressure considerably. patch coming shortly.
