To troubleshoot this further, can you please do the following?
  - update Kafka log4j to set DEBUG level for org.apache.ranger
  - restart Kafka
  - produce and consume few messages
  - attach ranger_kafka.log to this JIRA

Also, is this a Kerberos environment? Prior to Kafka version 0.9, Kafka supported authorization
only in Kerberoized environment. [~bosco] can you please confirm?
