I think you want to use something like

     <barcode:barcode xmlns:barcode="http://barcode4j.krysalis.org/ns">
        <xsl:attribute name="message">
           <xsl:value-of select="node"/>
        </xsl:attribute>
        ...
     </barcode:barcode>
